Training for Peace (TfP) er eit internasjonalt forskings- og opplæringsprogram som har som mål å auke kapasiteten og høgne kompetansen i fredsoperasjonar i Afrika. I dag består programmet av tre partnarinstitusjoner, i tillegg til NUPI: African Centre for Constructive Resolution of Disputes (ACCORD) og Institute for Security Studies (ISS) i Sør-Afrika, og Kofi Annan International Peacekeeping Training Center (KAIPTC) i Ghana.
TfP ved NUPI står i hovedsak for forsking, policyutvikling og informasjonsarbeid, i nært samarbeid med dei afrikanske partnarane, som står for opplæringa lokalt. Forskingsstøtte frå NUPI omfattar doktriner for fredsoperasjonar, særtrekk ved og lærdomar frå fredsoperasjonar i Afrika, utvikling av afrikansk sivil- og politikompetanse og -kapasitet i fredsoperasjonar, og analyser av afrikansk statsdanning. For programmet som heilskap har tema som vern av sivile i konfliktområder; avvæpning, demobilisering og reintegrering av soldatar; vern av svakt stilte grupper i konfliktområder, herunder barn, kvinner og flyktningar; korleis sivilt politi og militært personell bør sjå på menneskerettsbrot og brot på folkeretten i krig; problematikken rundt spreiing av handvåpen og hiv/aids; sivile- og politikapasitetar og kjønnsdimensjonen i fredsoperasjonar hatt høg prioritert. Andre tema, som tryggingssektorreform, sivil-militært samarbeid og integrering av fredsoperasjonar, har komme til.

The Hybridization of Peace Operations in Africa and the Protection of Civilians: Towards Coherent Doctrines?
This project will investigate how the ongoing UN/AU hybrid mission in Darfur (UNAMID) and the current operational restraints of African forces pose challenges to the emerging doctrine of integrated UN missions, as well as the practical challenges encountered at the doctrinal level in terms of standardizing two different rationales (AU and UN) into a common doctrine.
