Explaining US foreign policy after 9/11 – policies, strategies and debates
Prosjektet undersøker prinsipp, praksisar og hendingar som har forma amerikansk utanrikspolitikk sidan terroråtaka 11. septemberDeltakarer
The project explores the principles, practices and events that have shaped US foreign policy since the September 11 terrorist attacks. A more forward US posture in the immediate post-9/11 years has stimulated international scholarly and political debates about the future role and direction of US foreign policy. American unilateralism and exceptionalism became the trademarks of this foreign policy, leading to severe criticism from the international community and especially from Europe. The more recent challenges and setbacks in the attempts to stabilise Afghanistan and Iraq have brought forward an image of a hegemon in decline, also questioning US leadership in the world. At the domestic level, the number of casualties from the “war on terrorism”, especially in Iraq, has fuelled demands for US withdrawal. However, as is also discussed in the project, increased focus on “comprehensive approach” and state building as a new tool for security could lessen the criticism against US foreign policy and leadership and promote greater international consensus
